Dukla – Czechoslovak Army Corps Memorial

Dukla – Dukla Pass.

The monument is located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Vyšný Komárnik. The monument built in the area where heavy fighting once took place honours the fallen soldiers of the 1st Czech-Slovak Army Corps. The 28 meters high monument with a ceremonial hall was built in 1949 according to the architectural design of Ing. arch. J. Grus. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Dukla Pass a copy of the original statue of the Czechoslovak soldier (the original model was J. A. Vítek) was unveiled there. The sculpture “Žalujem (I Regret)”, created by the sculptor J. Kulich, was placed in the modernized premises of the Dukla lookout tower. On the colonnade leading to the monument are placed bronze plaques with engraved names of 1,256 fallen soldiers – members of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. Part of the memorial is a memorial cemetery where 565 members of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps who perished during the battle of the Dukla Pass are buried. Busts of Dukla’s heroes are located around the perimeter of the cemetery. In 1961, the monument was declared a national cultural monument.
