Water Mill in Krivany

In the cadastral area of Krivany there is a remarkable building - a water mill from the 17th century. In the past, the water mill from Krivany was driven by water fed to the top of a wooden wheel with blades called a trough. The grain was ground between two large stones that were specially adapted for this purpose; later it was ground on the so-called „roller mills“. The mill was in working order until 1952. It was used to grind grain into semolina, meal and flour. It produced corn meal, grits and electricity for its own use when there was no electricity in Krivany. The sawmill, which was all wooden, was used to cut wood into boards, squares and planks. Due to nationalisation in 1948 and later joining the cooperatives, the mill and the sawmill were closed and sealed in 1952.

In 1984 it received attention from the state when it was listed as a technical monument, but not enough to allocate some funds for its preservation. In 1991, work began to save the cultural asset. Since 1996, the civil association Association of the Preservationists of the Upper Torysa Stone Mill was established, whose main goal is to restore the old water mill to its original functional state with a water dam and water wheel.
