Military History Museum in Svidník It is one of the most significant sites of military history in north-eastern Slovakia. It is housed in a striking building on Bardejovská Street, whose shape resembles an anti-tank mine. The museum documents the wartime events that had a significant impact on the Eastern Carpathians region in the first half of the 20th century. It devotes particular attention to the fighting during the First World War, the interwar period, the Second World War and, in particular, the Carpathian-Dukla Operation of 1944.
From the Dukla Museum to a modern exhibition
The Svidník Museum Department continues the tradition of the Dukla Museum, which was established in 1965. Its exhibition spaces were officially opened on 4 October 1969 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Carpathian-Dukla Operation. The department is currently part of the Military History Museum, based in Piešťany. As at 31 December 2024, it had 10,685 items on record, organised into 22 museum collections.
The main exhibition, entitled The Military History of Slovakia, 1914–1945 It was opened to the public in its modernised form in 2011. Through information panels, period photographs, documents and authentic artefacts, it traces the military history of Slovakia from the period before the outbreak of the First World War to the end of the Second World War.
Weapons, uniforms and artefacts from battlefields
The first section of the exhibition focuses on the fighting in the Eastern Carpathians in 1914 and 1915 and its consequences for the inhabitants of north-eastern Slovakia. Visitors will see the uniforms of Czechoslovak legionnaires and soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army, as well as cold steel, firearms and historical machine guns. The next section explores the formation of Czechoslovakia, the building of its army, and the events that led to the collapse of the republic in March 1939.
The most extensive thematic section is devoted to the Second World War. It covers the events of 1939 to 1945, the partisan movement, the liberation of Slovakia and, above all, the course of the Carpathian–Dukla Operation. Among the valuable exhibits are period weapons and uniforms of German, Soviet and Czechoslovak soldiers. Also on display are the uniforms of Army General Ludvík Svoboda and Marshal of the Soviet Union Kirill Moskalenko, who commanded Czechoslovak and Soviet units during the operation.
The exhibition includes a diorama depicting a panoramic scene of the battles for the Dukla Pass. The space also serves as a small cinema, where visitors can watch a documentary film about the Carpathian-Dukla Operation and the combat route of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps in the USSR. The exhibition is complemented by touchscreen multimedia terminals providing further information and documentary films.
Military Equipment Park and War Memorial
Close to the museum building is an open-air Military Equipment Park. Tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery and aircraft are on display in the natural setting, providing an insight into the weaponry used during the fighting in the region. Next to the museum stands the Soviet Army Memorial, dating from 1954, with a war cemetery where more than 9,000 soldiers who fell during the fighting in the autumn of 1944 are buried.
The museum also includes an outlying exhibition at Dukla, featuring a viewing tower. From the tower, there is a panoramic view of the Dukla Pass and the countryside where battles took place during both world wars.

Tourists will find the Military History Museum at 14 Bardejovská Street in Svidník, not far from the town centre and the Soviet Army Memorial.
From the bus station, you can walk there through the town’s pedestrian zone and then along the road towards Bardejov.
In the permanent exhibition ‘Military History of Slovakia 1914–1945’, visitors can view historical photographs, documents, uniforms, weapons and authentic artefacts from battlefields, with a large part of the exhibition focusing on the Carpathian–Dukla Offensive. The site also includes a Military Equipment Park featuring tanks, artillery and aircraft.
