Memorial of the Czechoslovak Army Corps, Vyšný Komárnik, Slovakia

Dukla - memorial of the Czechoslovak Army Corps

The memorial is located in the cadastral territory of the village of Vyšný Komárnik. By building it in the area of the battles, the government of the Czech-Slovak Republic paid tribute to the fallen soldiers of the 1st Czech-Slovak Army Corps. The memorial was built in 1949 according to the architectural design of Ing. arch. J. Grus, with a ceremonial hall and a height of 28 metres. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Carpatho-Dukla Operation, an artistic copy of the original statue of the Czechoslovak soldier was placed in the area. Its original form was created by the sculptor J. A. Vítek. The sculpture of Žalju, created by sculptor J. Kulich, was placed in the modernised premises of the Dukla observation tower. On the colonnade leading to the memorial there are bronze plaques engraved with the names of 1256 fallen soldiers - members of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps in the USSR. The memorial includes a memorial cemetery where 565 members of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps in the USSR who died during the Carpatho-Dukla operation are buried. Busts of the heroes of Dukla are placed around the perimeter of the cemetery. In 1961 the memorial was declared a national cultural monument.
