Kysacka Cave, Kysak, Slovakia

Kysacka Cave

It is a natural creation that was accidentally discovered while breaking stone in a local quarry around 1913. The cave forms a small labyrinth of passages and its total length is 72 m. In the individual halls there are preserved stalactites and stalagmites, the walls of the cave are covered with stalactite waterfalls. The cave has been the target of naysayers and most of its beautiful decorations have been destroyed in the past, which was also the consequence of the fact that the planned opening of the cave never took place. Speleologists refer to it as the „Looted Cave“. Kysacka Cave is one of the important hibernation sites of bats. Their protection is taken care of by the Bat Conservation Group, which also organises regular censuses of these flying mammals. Seven species of bats have been recorded in the cave in Kysak. Of these, the most famous are the lesser horseshoe bat, the greater horseshoe bat and the common bat.
