The linden tree is the symbol of the Šariš town of Lipany, which according to historical sources had this tree in its original name. It was first mentioned in documentary records at the beginning of the 14th century as the Seven Linden Trees - Septemthillis, the Hungarian form of the name was Héthárs and the German Siebenlinden. The municipal coat of arms depicts seven green lime leaves in a silver field.
People remember that there used to be hundreds of trees in the city, but they were gradually thinned out as development expanded. But even today there are not a few of them and in the very centre in the city park there are several lime trees, but only one of them is exceptional, supposedly the last of the seven mentioned in history. The small-leaved lime tree is over 320 years old, the circumference of its trunk is 536 centimetres and its last leaves reach a height of 23 metres.
