Alexander Duchnovič Theatre - language changes
The Alexander Duchnovič Theatre is a professional, cultural and artistic institution in the field of theatre activity. In its beginnings, the theatre performed in Russian, and the dramaturgical repertoire, mostly Russian classics, corresponded to this. In the 1950s, the theatre switched to the Ukrainian language. Only in the 1980s a generational change took place in the theatre and the theatre gradually switched to the Ruthenian language, which is more understandable and comprehensible to our ethnic group. This orientation to the Ruthenian language was decided by the many requests of the local population, who, even in the last two free censuses, declared their native Ruthenian language and Ruthenian nationality, which they had not been allowed to do in the past 40 years. The theatre has a unique position in Slovakia. Its activities are aimed at the development and dissemination of the culture of Rusyns and Ukrainians in Slovakia, which is why it operates mainly as a touring theatre.Since the mid-1990s, the Alexander Duchnovich Theatre has been performing in Rusyn - the only theatre in Slovakia and in the world to do so. Every year the Alexander Duchnovich Theatre performs on stages all over Slovakia and participates in many domestic and international shows. In Prešov you can also visit the following sights: St. Nicholas Cathedral, Neptune's Fountain, Museum of Jewish Culture, Bosakova Bank, Florian Gate, Caraf's Prison, Rakoci Palace.
