The theatre was founded 24 November 1945 following a decision by the Ukrainian National Council in Prešov. In its early days, it operated under the name Ukrainian National Theatre, and its repertoire was influenced primarily by Russian and, later, Ukrainian drama. Since 1990, it has been named after a prominent Rusyn writer, poet and playwright Alexandra Duchnoviča.

The only professional Rusyn theatre in Slovakia

The most distinctive feature of DAD is its linguistic and cultural focus. Since the 1980s, the theatre has gradually begun to switch to the Rusyn language, and since the mid-1990s it has performed predominantly in Rusyn. As a result, it enjoys a unique status in Slovakia and provides a significant platform for the development of Rusyn drama.

The theatre also appeals to audiences from all over Slovakia. As it also operates as a touring theatre, its productions reach audiences not only in Prešov but also in other towns and villages. It regularly takes part in theatre festivals both at home and abroad.

The theatre box office is open from Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 11.00. Tickets can also be purchased online, and the box office is open 30 minutes before the start of the performance.
