Slanská cyklomagistrála offers an appealing combination of cycling, nature, history and engineering monuments. The route runs from Prešov through the villages of Dulova Ves, Kokošovce and Zlatá Baňa, all the way to the village of Červenica. It runs through the northern part of the volcanic mountain range Slanské vrchy and, thanks to its predominantly tarmac surface, it is suitable for leisure cyclists, families with older children and cyclists with trailers. The entire route can be covered as a full-day trip, or you can choose a shorter section depending on your fitness level and the time you have available.
Starting at the historic Solivar
The starting point is the Prešov-Solivar district, known for its historic salt production site. Solivar Museum It is one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in Slovakia and serves as a reminder of the period when salt was mined and processed in this area. You can therefore begin your trip with a brief visit to the historic site and then continue into the quieter countryside beyond the town.
Sigord Leisure Area
From Prešov, the route leads via Dulova Ves and Kokošovce to the holiday resort Sigord. It is particularly popular thanks to its reservoir, woodland setting and opportunities for relaxation. Cyclists can take a break by the water here, go for a walk in the surrounding area or visit the local mineral springs. Sigord is also a natural stopping point before the next climb inland. Zlatá Baňa and the remains of the old railway line
The cycle route continues towards the village of Zlatá Baňa, which is linked to the region’s mining, forestry and railway history. In the past, a forest railway ran through here – later known as the Pionierska Railway – which linked Prešov with the surrounding forests and the recreational area. Today, preserved remains and cycle paths mark its original route in some places.
There are also mineral springs in the vicinity of Zlatá Baňa, where cyclists can take a break and recharge their batteries. The route continues through countryside featuring meadows, forests and views of the surrounding hills. Pusté Pole and a tribute to the Slovak National Uprising
One of the key stops is Pusté Pole, where a monument to the Slovak National Uprising stands. It commemorates the events of the Second World War and the anti-fascist resistance in the region. The cycle tour therefore offers not only a sporting experience, but also an opportunity to learn about local history and visit places of remembrance.
The Protected Natural Areas of the Slanské Hills
Rare plant species can also be found in this part of the Slanské vrchy. Among the best known is the large-flowered pasque flower, the presence of which was one of the reasons for the protection of this nature reserve. Visitors should only walk along the marked paths, take care not to damage the plants, and respect the rules of nature conservation.
