The ponds in Veľký Šariš form a recreational and leisure area which is a popular spot for relaxing, going for walks and spending free time in the countryside. Their construction began between 2004 and 2006. Originally, three ponds were created, which were used primarily for fishing.
In 2010, the area was hit by severe flooding, as a result of which the third pond became completely silted up. After it had been cleared, a fourth pond was also constructed. The site now consists of a system of four water bodies, which complement the natural character of this part of the town.
Fisheries and the natural environment
The ponds are used primarily for sport and recreational fishing. The individual bodies of water are marked with information boards bearing the number and name of the relevant fishing area. The site thus provides a space for anglers, who can spend time here in a peaceful natural setting.
Another significant feature of the area is its location on bird migration routes. The ponds are situated in an area where several major bird migration routes converge. Birds migrating from Africa via the Apennine and Peloponnese peninsulas pass through here, as do species using the Israel–Turkey route. The water bodies and their surroundings therefore also offer an interesting spot for nature and birdwatching.
Cycling and leisure activities
An international cycle route runs alongside the ponds EUROVELO 11, which links several European regions and allows you to explore the surrounding countryside by bike. The route also leads towards the Sarus cycle bridge, which is one of the interesting features of the local cycling infrastructure.
The areas surrounding the lakes offer opportunities for both active and passive leisure. Visitors can make use of benches to sit on, large children’s play areas, and designated areas for barbecues. The natural surroundings provide the ideal setting for a break during a cycle ride, a peaceful spot to sit, or simply spending time with family and friends.
