Jewish suburbia

Jewish suburbia

The area of the so-called Jewish suburb is the most important site of Jewish cultural heritage in Bardejov. The complex of Jewish ritual buildings consists of the Old Synagogue, the House of Assembly (Hebrew: bet hamidrash), the ritual bath (Hebrew: mikveh), the expansion tower and the boiler house. In the past, there was also a ritual slaughterhouse on the site, which has not been preserved. These buildings served the spiritual and communal needs of the Orthodox Jewish community with a strong Hasidic orientation, which was the sixth largest Jewish community in Slovakia in the interwar period. The suburbium is located in the conservation area of the Bardejov Monument Reserve. The Old Synagogue was declared a national cultural monument in 1970, the mikveh and bet hamidrash in 2000. In the same year, the historic core of Bardejov, together with the Jewish suburb, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The owner of the site is the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in the Slovak Republic.
