Town Hall Bardejov, Bardejov, Slovakia

Bardejov City Hall

The Town Hall in Bardejov is a Gothic-Renaissance building built in the middle of the Town Hall Square. In terms of construction and significance, the town hall was a functional and ideological counterbalance to the parish church of St. Aegidius, it was the seat of the town council, the centre of commercial, social and cultural life of the town's inhabitants. From the architectural point of view, the town hall building is an important example of the penetration of Renaissance artistic and architectural elements into the receding Gothic concept of architecture. The end of the 15th century brought a flourishing economic and social life to Bardejov, which was also reflected in the life of the town's royalty. The important position of the town as well as the need for more representative premises for council meetings was to be ensured by the construction of a magnificent town hall. Following a decision of the town council, it was built in the centre of the market square.

Bardejov City Hall opened to the world

Renaissance Town Hall in Bardejov is a two-storey building standing in block character on a regular rectangular plan with the longer side in the north-south direction. It is characterised by high side gables of a gabled tiled roof and a Renaissance bay window on its eastern side, giving access to the second floor. On the gable of the northern façade are three carved windows and the town coat of arms. The gable of the southern façade is completed by four windows, a clock and painted coats of arms of the city and Hungary. At the top of the southern gable stands the figure of the legendary knight Roland with a halberd (the work of the master Jan of Prešov around 1509), the symbolic protector of the city's privileges. The original stone statue was replaced in 1641 by a wooden one covered with copper sheeting. The present statue is a copy and is made entirely of copper sheet. The windows on all facades have the same shapes. Both roof gables are flanked by groups of statues and crabs - the south gable: a lion, a man with a beard, a cat, a monkey, a cloth merchant, the north gable: a demon, a man with an hourglass, a dragon, a king, a stonemason and a man with a staff. The town hall has been beautifying Bardejov since the 16th century. Its historical and artistic significance was recognised by the society when in 1985 it was included in the list of national cultural monuments of Slovakia. As a monument of supra-regional significance, the town hall, together with other monuments of the historical centre of Bardejov inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Today, the historical premises of the town hall are used as rooms of the Šariš Museum, where the historical exposition Bardejov - Free Royal Town is permanently placed.
