Basilica of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God in Ľutina

Basilica of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God in Ľutina (popularly known as Mariánska hora)

The Marian pilgrimage site Ľutina is situated (also popularly known as Marian Mountain) on the southern slope of the Čergov Mountains in the valley of the Ľutinka stream. Ľutinská hora came into public awareness as the place of the alleged apparitions of St. Nicholas. The village has been mentioned since 1330, but it was the apparitions that brought much more attention to this place. The apparitions took place in 1851, during which the saint gave Zuzana Feketova a Marian icon, making Ľutina the largest Greek Catholic Marian pilgrimage site in Slovakia. Originally there was a wooden church in the village. Over time it ceased to be suitable and in 1908 a new stone church was completed. Shortly before its completion, the original wooden church burnt down. After the restoration of the Greek Catholic Church in 1968, the number of pilgrims increased every year. At the end of the Marian year 1988, during a pilgrimage, Ordinary Ján Hirka read the Apostolic Breve by which the Roman Pope John Paul II elevated the Lviv church and adjacent buildings to the status of a minor basilica. At the suggestion of the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Prešov, Ján Babjak SJ, the Basilica was connected to the Lutin mountain by the Way of Light with chapels containing fourteen apparitions with meditations from the Feast of the Resurrection to the Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. These twin chapels lead over the Basilica to the Lute Mountain by a new path through the forest. Another landmark of the basilica grounds is the wooden Church of the Holy Family, which rises on a rock above the basilica. The great attraction of this temple is its tower, which serves as a lookout point for the whole surrounding area. At the same time as the Temple of the Holy Family and the Way of Light, the Stations of the Cross were made, which start at the Chapel of St. Nicholas and end at the wooden temple on the hill. The whole complex includes two parallel paths with a stream of flowing water between them, as well as a mini-canvas with replicas of all the wooden churches from Slovakia and several rare objects from neighbouring Ukraine and Poland. Ľutinská hora (Mariánska hora) is the site of the apparition located about 800 meters from the basilica. It is a place where thousands of believers gather every year for the main pilgrimage, as well as for various liturgical and prayer celebrations. There are four chapels on the mountain: Chapel of St. Nicholas with a spring, Chapel of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God with liturgical space, Chapel of St. Anne and Chapel of the Holy Cross. There are several pilgrimage sites and temples of God in the region. It is certainly worth a visit Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist, Gaboltov pilgrimage site, St. Martin of Tours Nature Trail, Kikapa pilgrimage site. Source: https://bazilikalutina.sk/
