Monument zone of the town of Sabinov

The historic centre of Sabinov was designated as conservation area. Parts of the bastions and a section of the rampart wall have been preserved. The building of the Evangelical Lyceum – later the Piarist Grammar School – in the centre of Freedom Square is also a listed building. Thirty town houses surrounding Freedom Square are subject to heritage protection.

Landmarks of the conservation area

Among the main attractions are Church of St. John the Baptist - three-nave Gothic church. The vaulting of the choir and chapel was completed in 1503 by the Košice master Mikuláš Krompholz. The main altar and some of the sculptures were made by Master Paul of Levoča (the original altar is in Budapest). Church of Our Lady is originally a gothic chapel in the cemetery from 1375. It was enlarged in 1484 and Baroqueised in the 17th century. From 1740 to 1920 it served as a church for the Piarist monastery. Two Protestant churches were built outside the city walls in the early 19th century as toleration churches without towers. Greek Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Built in 1901, it was elevated to a diocesan place of pilgrimage in 1999.

The value of the almost intactly preserved medieval plan of Sabinov is increased by the belt of the town fortification. The beginning dates back to the 15th century. Some parts of the wall are still preserved, 2 bastions are reconstructed and 4 are almost destroyed. The remains of the southern gate were uncovered in front of the district office building.
