Jewish cemetery Brezovica

Brezovica lies in the valley of Torysa under the eastern outcrops of the Levoča Hills. The village developed on the old road leading from Šariš to Spiš, which is referred to in the source materials as "via magna" the great road. Later, after the formation of the villages of Tichý Potok and Blažov with the adjacent settlements of Dolina, Čertež and Ždiar, a crossroads of roads was created in the village, which helped Brezovice to develop as a market settlement. The inhabitants were engaged in wheelwrighting, carpentry and the manufacture of wooden tools. The village once had an incredible 7 manor houses and a Renaissance manor house from the 17th century and there was also a synagogue. It was a wooden log building, which was apparently built after the edict of tolerance issued by Joseph II. The exact year of construction and destruction of the synagogue is unknown, but it probably stood at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It disappeared shortly after World War II, when it was still briefly used as a barn for storing hay. Before that, the village was also home to a large Jewish community, as evidenced by the relatively large Jewish cemetery. Jews came here in the second half of the 18th century from the Polish Halych. Their population growth was quite rapid. Brezovica became the seat of the Jewish rabbinate. In 1904 there were about 216 Jews living in Brezovica and smaller communities are also mentioned in Blažov, Dolina, Tichy Potok, Nizhny Slavkov, Vysoká and Brezovicka. The fame of the synagogue, in addition to the existing yeshiva from which many outstanding rabbis graduated, was spread by an apprenticeship focusing on selected crafts.
