In the first third of the 19th century a wooden „grodzinský“ bridge was built over the Topľa River, a massive masterpiece with a length of 90 metres. The bridge was destroyed at the end of World War II. And here the history of the largest arch in Central Europe begins to be written.
The longest railway bridge
Hanušovský viaduct is the longest railway bridge built in an arch (with a length of 390 m) not only in Slovakia, but also in Central Europe. It consists of one arched opening and nine openings with steel truss construction. It was built as part of the fifty-kilometre line from Prešov to Strážske and was part of four railway viaducts with a total length of 946.92 metres. The line was very important, because until that date Zemplín had a railway connection only through the territory of Hungary by the so-called "footpath".At a height of 40 metres
The Hanušovský viaduct is built of 9 steel truss bridge structures and concrete pillars lined with line masonry. The bridge decks were once lined with oak planks, later replaced by grooved plates. The track on the viaduct is above ground at the highest height of 40 m. The level of the railway rises 10 ‰ and the foundations of the pillars are said to be as deep as the height of the pillars above the ground. There are four other bridge structures in the cadastral area of the town. One over the valley „Hrabovec“, another immediately behind the railway station in the valley „Hlibovec“ and another between the station Bystré and the switching station Pavlovce, all of which belong to the national cultural monuments.
