Under the castle hill in Veľký Šariš there is a cycle route that smoothly connects the town of Prešov, the town of Veľký Šariš and the gardening settlement in Šarišské Michaľany. The route includes traffic signs, bike shelters and a unique bridge in Slovakia. Historicizing wooden cycle bridge "Sarus" crosses the Torysa River, with elements reminiscent of a castle connecting the past with the present. The model for the designers was the towering Šariš Castle. On the middle support of the bridge a resting cantilevered lookout to the north and south side is proposed. The bridge is 84 metres long and 3 metres wide.
The cycle route leading to the wooden bridge is interesting because it is surrounded by nature and runs alongside a watercourse, which certainly makes it more interesting and attractive than the cycle routes running parallel to the current roads. At the end of the town of Veľký Šariš, it runs alongside the „Rybníky“ recreation zone“, where you can relax. The five-kilometre stretch from Veľký Šariš to Šarišské Michaliany is part of the EuroVelo 11 project. EuroVelo is a network of cycling roads that connect major European destinations across the continent. EuroVelo 11 is to connect the northernmost point of Scandinavia, Cape Nora in Norway, with Athens in Greece.
Getting to the bridge:
- from the gardening part of Šarišské Michaliany it is within 5 minutes by bike. At the entrance there is an information board about litter in nature.
- from the city of Prešov - the final stop at Sídlisku III, it is within 10 km, follow the signs.
- from Veľký Šariš it is up to 5 km, you go around the natural rest zone Rybníky.
Difficulty: the route is suitable for all ages whether on foot or by bike.
Bonus: all the time the castle hill will be above you and the Šariš castle will be on it in different views
