Sigord Reservoir is situated within the cadastral area of the municipality Kokošovce, on the edge Slanské hills, about a 15-minute drive from Prešov. Thanks to its proximity to the regional capital, its pleasant natural surroundings and its easy accessibility, it is one of the traditional holiday destinations in the Šariš region. The tranquil water surface, surrounded by forests, provides the ideal setting for walks, family outings, cycling and a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The reservoir was built between 1965 to 1967. Its original purpose was to provide water for irrigating the surrounding farmland, but it gradually came to be used primarily for recreational purposes. As early as the second half of the 20th century, a jetty was built here and visitors were able to hire boats or pedalos. Sigord thus established itself as a firm favourite among the residents of Prešov and the wider surrounding area as a popular day-trip destination.
A reservoir surrounded by nature
Sigord’s biggest attraction is the combination of water bodies and forest environments. Visitors can stroll along the banks, relax on the benches or take in the ever-changing landscape of the Slanské vrchy.
With the help of volunteers, an educational trail known as … was created around the reservoir The Sigord Circle. This easy circular walk can be completed at a leisurely pace in around 30 minutes. Along the route, there are information boards providing details of the local wildlife, benches offering views of the water, and a wooden bridge over the Delňa stream. The footpath is suitable for families with children, leisure walkers and visitors simply looking for a short stroll in the countryside.
Boating and active leisure
A key feature of the leisure area is Sigord Shipyard, the restoration of which has helped to bring social and recreational life back to the area. Since 2017, the Čavargy civic association has been involved in its development, combining activities in the fields of culture, sport, ecology, education and local development. Seating areas, fire pits and other simple features designed for relaxation have been created around the boathouse.
During the season, visitors can hire a boat or a pedalos and view the reservoir directly from the water’s surface. The operation of the water attractions depends on the weather, the season and current conditions, so it is advisable to check the availability of services before you travel. Access to the reservoir itself, walking around the water’s edge and using the publicly accessible footpaths are free of charge, whilst boat hire is subject to a fee.
Swimming and winter activities
Sigord Although it has been used for recreational swimming in the past, it is not necessarily an officially operated natural swimming area with regular supervision throughout each season. Before entering the water, it is therefore important to take into account its current quality, the weather, the condition of the banks and any local warnings.
In winter, the frozen surface is sometimes used for ice skating. However, you may only go onto the ice at your own risk and only when it is of a safe thickness and strength.
Access and parking
The easiest way for visitors to get to the reservoir is by car through the village of Kokošovce towards the Sigord leisure area. Parking is available in the car park above the boathouse, from where you can continue on foot along a short path to the water. During summer weekends and events, the area can get quite busy, so please park considerately and do not block access roads.
