Wine Museum, Florianova Street, Prešov, Slovakia

Wine Museum

The Wine Museum is one of the more unusual tourist attractions in the historic centre of Prešov. It is situated in cellar rooms dating back more than five hundred years beneath the town hall, with an entrance from Floriánova Street. The extensive exhibition spans two floors and covers approximately 500 square metres. The vaulted corridors, brick walls and atmosphere of the historic underground create an impressive setting that will captivate both wine lovers and visitors keen to learn about the city’s history.

From a town wine bar to a museum

The history of the cellars dates back to the early 16th century. Following a major fire in the town in 1504, they were converted into the town wine bar. The main vaulted hall was used for social gatherings, whilst the other rooms were used to store wine and barrels.

In later periods, the function of the premises changed. Some parts were used as a prison, as a shelter during the war years, and later as a storeroom. Gradually, however, the cellars fell into disrepair. Their restoration began in 1993, and just one year later the Wine Museum was opened there.

Slovak and international wines

At the heart of the museum is an extensive collection of almost 2,000 types of wine. The ground floor provides an insight into Slovak viticulture and showcases wines from all of Slovakia’s wine-growing regions. Represented are large wine-producing companies, smaller private producers, cooperatives and school wineries.

Through information panels, visitors can learn more about the climatic conditions of the individual regions, the grape varieties grown there and traditional methods of wine production. Particular attention is paid to the Tokaj wine-growing region, its history, typical grape varieties and the production of Tokaj wines.

On the second floor, wines from other European countries, as well as from Asia, Africa, Australia and South America, are on display. The exhibition also features sparkling wines, port, sherry, Madeira and vermouth. The collection is complemented by historical vessels, tools and other items associated with viticulture and grape processing.

Tastings and social events

The museum also offers guided wine-tasting sessions, during which visitors learn about the correct way to taste, serve and evaluate wine. The scope of the tasting is arranged by prior agreement, and it is advisable to book group visits in advance.

The museum includes a tasting room with a capacity of around 50 guests. It is used for wine tastings, corporate meetings, training sessions, family celebrations and other social events. A selection of wines, gift sets, glasses, decanters and wine-related items can also be purchased at the on-site shop.
