Lačnovský Canyon, also known as Lačnov Gorge or the Lačnovský Stream Gorge, is one of the most interesting natural sites in the Šariš region. It is situated in the north-eastern part of the Branisko Mountains, between the village of Lipovce and the hamlet of Lačnov. The canyon was formed by the Lačnovský Stream as it gradually carved its way through the dolomite and limestone bedrock. The result is approximately A 2-kilometre-long rocky gorge with a host of striking rock formations, rapids and waterfalls.
Rock faces, waterfalls and natural formations
The Lačnov Gorge is part of Kamenná Baba National Nature Reserve, which protects the area’s exceptionally valuable geological, geomorphological and biological features. The steep rock faces reach heights of up to approximately 100 metres in places. The action of water and the weathering of rocks have created bizarre rock formations here, which are among the greatest attractions of the entire site.
Among the best-known formations are Moses’ pillar, a striking rock tower approximately 60 metres high. Other prominent features include Stone Baba, rock eye Gatehouse and a rock formation Chimney. In the narrowest parts of the gorge, the Lačnovský stream forms rapids and a series of small waterfalls. It is precisely this combination of water, rocks and the forest setting that gives the canyon a character reminiscent of the famous gorges of the Slovak Paradise.
Hiking through the Lačnovský Canyon
The Lačnovský Canyon is accessible via on a signposted footpath. One of the main starting points is the village of Lipovce, from where the route continues through the Lipovce Valley towards the gorge. The entire walk through the canyon is approximately 1.8 kilometres long and, according to the regional tourism portal, takes just under an hour. The path winds through rugged terrain and is equipped in several places with metal steps, ladders, footbridges and safety chains.
When walking along this route, bear in mind that the footpath runs right alongside the stream in places, and in some sections it is necessary to to cross its bed or to traverse rocky terrain. The most challenging section is the end of the gorge, which climbs towards the meadow in front of the hamlet of Lačnov. Given the nature of the terrain, sturdy walking boots are recommended, and extra care should be taken, particularly after rain or when the water level is high.
Kamenná Baba and the Legends
There is also a folk legend associated with the gorge about Stone Babe, according to which a woman who wanted to throw her stepchild off a cliff was turned to stone. According to another regional legend, the rock formation is linked to the tragic story of two lovers. It is precisely these stories and the names of the rock formations that lend the Lačnov Canyon its distinctive atmosphere.
A trip around the Lačnovský Canyon
A visit to the gorge can be combined with other attractions in the vicinity of Lipovce and Lačnov. Nearby, there is Zlá diera Cave, Srdiečko Viewpoint, remains Lipovský Castle and the village of Lačnov, with its traditional folk architecture. Another place of interest is The Lačnov Gravity Anomaly, which creates an optical illusion whereby objects appear to be moving uphill.
The Lačnovský Canyon thus offers a combination of hiking, geological points of interest, rock formations and places steeped in legend. Thanks to its relatively short length, it is also suitable as a standalone trip, but when combined with other sites in the area, it can form part of a full-day itinerary taking in the natural and cultural attractions of the Šariš region.

Lačnovský Canyon It is a protected natural area where one can observe the effects of water on dolomite and limestone rocks. An interesting feature are the waterfalls known as Prague, which were formed in the bed of the Lačnovský stream.
Walking through the gorge requires suitable walking boots, particularly after rain, when the rocks and the path may be slippery. Extra caution is required when the water level is high. It is possible to walk in the area along the signposted footpath.
You can combine your visit with a trip to the Zlá diera cave, to the Srdiečko viewpoint or to the village of Lačnov, which is known for its well-preserved traditional architecture. The Lačnov gravitational anomaly is also located in the vicinity.
The Lačnovský Canyon is a good choice for visitors looking for lesser-known tourist spots in the Šariš region. The short trail offers a combination of rock faces, waterfalls, woodland and rugged terrain.
