Green Rock It is a striking limestone crag situated in the northern part of the Branisko Mountains, not far from the village of Vyšný Slavkov. It lies at an altitude of approximately 975 metres and is one of the most interesting natural and scenic spots in the Spiš and Šariš regions. Thanks to its location, rocky terrain and views stretching across the wider countryside, it is a popular destination for tourists seeking peaceful spots in the countryside.
The rocky crag and its name
Zelená skala is composed of limestone, which forms a striking rock formation rising above the surrounding woodland. Its name derives from the green moss that covers part of the rock. The cliff itself, together with the surrounding forest, creates a distinctive natural landscape that changes with the seasons.
The site was opened to the public in 2006, when local enthusiasts from Vyšný Slavkov restored it and cleared it of dense vegetation. Today, visitors to the viewpoint will also find a bench there, offering a place to rest and enjoy the surrounding countryside.
Views of Spiš and the surrounding mountain ranges
One of the main attractions of Zelená skala is the views over the Spiš region and the surrounding mountain ranges. On a clear day, you can see Spiš Castle, the Sihoť plateau and the distant hills. Under favourable conditions, the High Tatras and the surrounding mountain ranges can also be seen on the horizon.
The spot has a special atmosphere at sunset, when the sun’s rays illuminate the surrounding countryside. Thanks to its views and peaceful setting, Zelená skala is an ideal place for a short break during a hike or for taking photographs.
Hiking in the Branisko Mountains
A signposted footpath leads to Zelená skala from the village of Vyšný Slavkov. The ascent takes you through woodland and gradually climbs towards the rocky outcrop. Zelená skala can be the destination of a standalone hike, or a stop-off on a longer route heading towards Smrekovica, the highest peak in the Branisko range.
The surrounding area offers opportunities for further hiking trips and exploring the mountain range’s natural nooks and crannies. Zelená skala is ideal for visitors who wish to combine outdoor activities with beautiful views and a break away from the hustle and bustle of tourist centres.

The starting point for the hike is the village of Vyšný Slavkov, from where a signposted footpath leads to Zelená skala. The route begins in the village and continues into the wooded landscape of the Branisko Mountains. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the signposts and choose a suitable place to park.
The hike takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and follows a route mainly through woodland. The path climbs gradually; in places it may be stony, with tree roots, and after rain it can be muddy or slippery. The walk requires a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy walking boots.
Upon reaching the rocky outcrop, views open up over the surrounding Spiš countryside and the mountain ranges in the distance. There is a spot near the viewpoint where you can take a short break. You should tread carefully on the rocks, especially when they are wet or in strong winds.
Zelená skala is freely accessible. As it is situated in a natural environment, there are no standard facilities or refreshments along the route. It is advisable to bring water and any necessary equipment with you. The trip can be combined with a walk along the hiking trails of the Branisko Mountains.
