The Wooden Church of the Holy Family

The Wooden Church of the Holy Family with an observation tower in Ľutine stands out against the rock above The Basilica of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. It was consecrated in 2015.

This is a replica of the burnt-down wooden church originally dedicated to St Cosmas and St Damian, which burnt down in 1908. The foundations of the original church can be found on the square in front of the basilica, where it once stood.

A major attraction the newly built wooden church is its tower, which serves as a viewing point. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the village of Ľutina, the Šariš Highlands and the slopes of the Čergov Mountains.

Whilst you’re there, be sure not to miss the mini-open-air museum of wooden churches, where you’ll find more than 40 miniature gems of folk and religious architecture of the Eastern Rite. Furthermore, the village of Ľutina itself is the most important place of pilgrimage for the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia.
