Csontváry exhibition in Sabinov

Sabinov is the birthplace of one of the most distinctive and fascinating painters of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries – Teodora Kostka Csontváry. His artistic legacy is also commemorated today by an exhibition right in the town centre, where visitors can see 13 exact copies of his works.

Csontváry’s paintings are on display at First floor of Sabinov Town Hall, 57 Námestí slobody. The exhibition was brought to Sabinov from Pécs in Hungary in October 2019 to mark the 100th anniversary of the artist’s death. Since June 2021, it has been housed in the town hall, which has thus been transformed into a small gallery for visitors. 

Sabinov – the birthplace of a famous painter

Teodor Kostka Csontváry was born 5 July 1853 in Sabinov. His birthplace is situated at 43 Freedom Square, just a stone’s throw from where a collection of his reproductions is now on display.

A visit to the exhibition thus offers an interesting blend of art and local history. Visitors can view the works of an artist whose name has become famous far beyond the region’s borders, whilst at the same time finding themselves right in the town where his life story began. A commemorative plaque marks his birthplace, and Csontváry’s legacy is an integral part of cultural life in Sabinov. 

13 works in the centre of Sabinov

The exhibition presents a selection of Csontváry’s works through 13 copies of the paintings, which were brought from Pécs. Among the works on display are well-known paintings such as *The Lonely Cedar*, *Mary’s Well in Nazareth*, *The Mount of Olives in Jerusalem*, *Castellammare di Stabia*, *The Moroccan Teacher*, *The Roman Bridge in Mostar*, *Storm in Hortobágy*, Waterfalls in Jajce, The Great Cold Valley and Little Taormina. 

Each of these works showcases a different aspect of Csontváry’s oeuvre. In his paintings, the artist often depicted monumental landscapes, historical sites and striking natural scenery. His works are characterised by bold colours, an unusual atmosphere and a distinctive way of capturing light and space.

From pharmacist to painter

Csontváry’s life story is almost as fascinating as his paintings. He did not turn to professional painting until later in life, having originally worked as a pharmacist. His artistic journey was linked to travelling and seeking inspiration in various corners of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

It was his travels that had a significant influence on his work. He visited places that later featured in his monumental paintings. As a result, his work brings together European cities, ancient monuments, exotic landscapes and dramatic natural scenery.

The Lonely Cedar and Other Well-Known Works

One of Csontváry’s best-known paintings is *The Lonely Cedar*, which has become something of a symbol of his work. The striking tree standing in a monumental landscape is characterised by its impressive composition and mysterious atmosphere.

In Sabinov, visitors can view an exact replica of it alongside other well-known works. These reproductions offer an insight into the work of an artist whose originals are now held in major museum collections, primarily in Hungary.

A small gallery at the town hall

The unusual location of the exhibition is an interesting feature in its own right. Instead of a traditional gallery, visitors set off to see Csontváry’s paintings at Sabinov Town Hall.

A small gallery has been set up on the first floor of the historic building, showcasing his work to both local residents and tourists. The town reports that the exhibition is also visited by organised groups of schoolchildren, local residents and visitors from various parts of Slovakia. Csontváry’s legacy in Sabinov

Sabinov’s connection with its famous son does not end with the exhibition. The town also hosts an annual art competition Csontváry’s Wandering Shoes, which is aimed at pupils and encourages their own creativity and interest in the arts. 

Csontváry’s name thus remains a living part of cultural life in Sabinov. Moreover, the exhibition of reproductions enables visitors to discover his work right in the town where he was born in 1853.

The Csontváry exhibition makes for a pleasant stop on a tour of Sabinov’s historic centre. After visiting the exhibition, you can continue on to Freedom Square, see the painter’s birthplace with its commemorative plaque, or explore the town’s other historic landmarks.

The exhibition is of interest not only to lovers of the fine arts. It also tells the story of a man from Sabinov who went from being a chemist to a painter, travelled extensively and created works that today rank among the most remarkable examples of Central European art.
