The town Lipany is the cultural and administrative centre of the northern part The Upper Torys Region. It stretches along the upper reaches of the river Torysa, among The Šariš Highlands and the mountains Chergov.
The first written reference to the town dates from the year 1312, when Lipany were part of The Kamenice Estate. According to historical tradition, there used to be a sacred Slavic lime grove within the town’s boundaries. This is the origin of both the town’s name and its symbol seven lime trees, which still form part of the town’s coat of arms today.
Thanks to its location on a major trade route from They’re heading to Poland Lipany gradually developed and in the 16th century They were among the largest towns in the Šariš region. Their subsequent development was adversely affected by a major fire in 1880 and population migration.
In the year 1909 Lipany became the administrative centre of the district, which was in 1924 moved to Sabinov. The inhabitants originally made their living mainly from agriculture and crafts, and industrial production began to develop later on.
The town recorded its highest economic growth after the Second World War, when it developed in particular the textile and engineering industries, as well as education and healthcare. In 2012 Lipany marked the occasion The 700th anniversary of the first written record.
