Prešov and surroundings

Saris (Hungarian: Sáros; German: Scharosch; Ukr: Шариш; Lat. comitatus Sarossiensis) is our Slovak region and tourism region (full name Šariš tourism region). The region is divided into Upper Šariš with its centre in Bardejov and Lower Šariš with its centre in Prešov.

In the Younger Iron Age on our territory there was an expansion of the Celts. This important ethnic group laid the foundations for ore mining and taught the indigenous inhabitants of our territory how to process metals. The oldest name of the territory, after the Celts, has been preserved SAOURIS, which loosely translated means „a high hill above the water“. The Celts very accurately named our region as they saw it at the time. The natural etymological evolution is how today's Šariš developed. This name is several centuries older than the well-known Trencian LAUGARICIO. The settlement, from which the permanent settlement of our territory is derived, dates back to the 6th-7th centuries and is documented by archaeological findings. In the past, the castle hill belonged to the seat of administration in the Middle Ages until 1647, after which Prešov became the centre of the region. The town became an economic and cultural centre and, along with Košice, was one of the important settlements of north-eastern Hungary. Nowadays, it is one of the centres not only of the Šariš region, but also of the entire Prešov county. In addition to its rich history and many historical, cultural and technical monuments, the town is also famous for the fact that only a stone's throw away you can find exceptional places, towns and unique monuments of world importance.

The Solivar district hides unique salt museumSolivar, which is a national cultural monument and is one of the most important technical monuments in Slovakia. The unique complex of technical buildings for pumping and boiling salt from brine dates back to the 17th century. The objects for rock salt extraction and brine pumping in Solivar include, in particular, the shaft Leopold, cheterne (brine reservoirs), a smelter, a brewhouse, a salt store (chambers), blacksmith's workshops and a knocker's shop (turntable). The name of the museum is not a coincidence, one of the most precious Geoparks in Slovakia is located above Solivar Geopark Slánske vrchy. They offer the beauty of unspoilt nature, history and uniqueness of world-class Opal Mines. Opposite the Slánský hills to the northwest you will find the unique history of the region and the largest castle in Slovakia. Šariš Castlewith the town of the same name. Just a stone's throw from it you will find a village hidden by meadows full of herbs Lachnov and at her anomaly you have never heard of before, whether cave The Evil Hole, just a quick glance Lacnov Gorge. It is impossible to mention everything, but you can find everything in our tourist attractions of the Šariš region.
