Bardejov It is situated in north-eastern Slovakia, not far from the Polish border. Thanks to its well-preserved historic centre, Gothic architecture and significant monuments, it is one of Slovakia’s most valuable towns. Since 2000 is its historic centre, together with Jewish suburbs registered in UNESCO World Heritage List.
The earliest written reference to the town dates from the year 1241. Its development was aided by its location on a major trade route between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. In the year 1376 Bardejov was granted the status of free royal town and became an important centre for trade, crafts and learning.
The town’s most prominent feature is Minor Basilica of Saint Egidius with eleven rare Gothic winged altars. In the centre of the historic square stands town hall, which combines elements of the late Gothic and Renaissance styles and is one of the town’s most significant architectural monuments. The historic centre is complemented by town houses and a well-preserved system the city walls and bastions.
During the Reformation, Bardejov was an important centre education, printing and culture. A humanist and teacher worked here Leonard Stöckel and as early as the 16th century, the town was home to one of the first public libraries in Hungary.
An important part of our cultural heritage is Jewish suburbia including a synagogue, ritual baths and other farm buildings. The town’s religious and cultural diversity is also reflected in its Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Greek Catholic and Orthodox churches.
An integral part of the town are Bardejov Spa, known for its healing springs and The Museum of Folk Architecture, the oldest open-air museum in Slovakia. Among the most significant cultural events is the traditional Bardejov Fair, whose history dates back to the 14th century.
