Protected Starý mlyn Waterfalls are situated in the picturesque Čierny močiar valley above the village of Nižný Slavkov in the Sabinov district. The valley is characterised by steep cliffs, dense forest and a narrow forest track, along which the stream forms cascades and waterfalls. It is a remarkable natural monument, one of the lesser-known yet impressive natural attractions of the Šariš region.
Čierny močiar Valley
The waterfalls are situated at an altitude of approximately 690 metres in a wooded area on the border between the Branisko, Bachurne and Levočské Hills. This tranquil valley, with its unspoilt natural beauty, offers a pleasant escape from civilisation and a peaceful spot to relax whilst listening to the sound of the water. The waterfalls are at their most spectacular in spring and after heavy rainfall, when the stream is at its fullest.
Access
A red hiking trail leads to the waterfalls from the village of Nižný Slavkov. At the end of the village, the route crosses the stream via a ford, which can be bypassed by taking the footpath on the left, past the cemetery and over a small bridge. There is a small well along the way where you can refresh yourself with water. The route is approximately 3.7 km long with an elevation gain of around 180 metres and is an easy walk. It follows a forest track that is also suitable for mountain bikes. There is also a photo spot by the waterfalls.
In the surrounding area
A visit to the waterfalls can be combined with a trip to the viewpoint Green Rock with a bench above Vyšný Slavkov, at Spruce, Branisko’s highest peak, or the Bachureň mountain range.
