The walkway of the Oscar-winning film The Shop on the Korze

Shop on the Corniche is a Czechoslovak film directed by Jan Kadár and Elmar Klos. It was made in 1965 based on a short story by Ladislav Grosman. In 1966, the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Shop on the Corniche is set during the Second World War in a small town of the Slovak state. The carpenter Tóno Brtko, an honest and decent man, accepts an arizona decree on the shop of the old Mrs. Lautmann under pressure from his wife and high-ranking brother-in-law. Even though the shop is unprofitable, Brtko persists in it and pretends to make the arizona. The old lady cares for Ton like a son and he helps her as much as he can. The day comes, however, when all the Jews of the town receive a summons to be transported. All except Mrs Lautmann. At first Tono tries to hide her, but later he persuades her to turn herself in. The pressure of events leads Tóno Brtek to a borderline life situation.
This film project was made by a couple of modest directors - Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos. When the film was initially released, it was met with a great wave of opposition not only from the Slovaks, but also from the state leadership in Prague. After all, the film itself was shown only because the then president Antonín Novotný wanted to harm the Slovak part of the country. History itself shows how wrong he was.
The Shop on the Korze won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966, and a year later Ida Kamińska received an unconverted nomination in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, a Special Honorable Mention at the Cannes IFF, the Klement Gottwald State Prize for J. Kadár, the E. Klos, I. Kamińska and J. Kroner, the New York Film Critics Award, the Donatello David Award for Best Foreign Film of 1966 and the Czechoslovak Film Critics Award
In Sabinov, a tourist project called the Sidewalk Shop on the Corniche was created based on the film, 11 boards, that locate the places where the first Czechoslovak Oscar film was made.
QR code on the information board, just take a picture via the mobile app and the specific a sketch in a short time sequence. Informative texts in Slovak, German and English not only draw the visitor into the action and show him the place where the camera stood at the time of filming, but modern technology places him directly into the time where he can not only enjoy the atmosphere of filming and be a part of it, but also experience the humanistic message of the film itself. This project is therefore a potential not only for the development of tourism in the city, or the encouragement of local patriotism. It also shows us a moral and ethical code. This project will portray it in such a way that history will teach us a lesson and that, through our fault, it will not repeat itself.
