Cyclists can actively use the more than 6 km long section and enjoy the beautiful view from their bicycles.
Between 2018 and 2020, the city of Prešov managed to implement the construction of the first stage of the long-awaited cycle railway from Prešov to the Sigord recreation area. The constructed section of the bicycle road with an asphalt surface suitable for cyclists and skaters is 6.5 km long. The cycle track is 3 metres wide (one lane is 1.5 metres wide) and is bi-directional (i.e. 2 lanes).
The bicycle railway follows the route of the former forest railway, later the so-called Pioneer Railway and connected the town of Prešov with the nearby recreational area of Sigord. In Prešov, this cycle track starts in the Solivar district (at the exit in the direction of Dulova Ves, opposite the AGROPLUS Prešov cooperative) and directs cyclists through Dulova Ves and Kokošovce to the Sigord recreation area. Cyclists will thus be able to travel comfortably and, above all, safely to explore the Slanské hory Mountains, with beautiful views of our region.
There are also parking areas for bicycles with racks for storing them, benches with garbage bins and information boards lining the path.
The construction was carried out by Swietelsky Slovakia, spol. s.r.o. The project Cycle Railway is inspired by the European type of projects „From-rails-to-rails“, by converting former railways - forest, narrow-gauge or service railways into cycle paths or cycling routes.
