Regetov Peat Bog, Regetovka, Slovakia

Regetov peat bog

NPR Regetovské peat bog is situated near the village of Regetovka, at the foot of Paledovka hill in the Busov mountains, approximately 520 - 550 metres above sea level. On an area of 2.55 hectares it represents a rare peat-moor biotope. It is located in a waterlogged lowland, locally called Stav, which is waterlogged by streams flowing down the flysch formations. The wettest part, continuously covered with peat, is located in the centre of the lowland. It is overgrown with typical groups of shrubs dominated by sticky alder and willows. Depending on the degree of waterlogging, several types of communities have developed here, some of which have been mown in the past, thus creating conditions for the occurrence of very rare plant species. The meadow communities are dominated by sedges, the more important plants are the three-leaved vachta, the carnivorous sundew, the crested fern, the May fern, and the real gem is the very rare marsh devil's-bit scabious. The basis for these species is formed by the aforementioned continuous stands of peat and mosses. Similar communities are unparalleled in eastern Slovakia and are a floristic locality of national importance.

Information

Village Regetovka Municipal Office Regetovka 25 08633 Zborov Tel: +421 (0)54 479 83 33 Mobile: +421 951 018 928 E-mail: obecregetovka@gmail.com The easiest way to get to the NPR is from the village of Regetovka, from the Cactus restaurant. From there, a hiking trail with a yellow hiking trail marker will lead you to the NPR. Except for a short stretch, the trail goes steadily uphill, mostly through the forest, and it will take you no more than 15-20 minutes to get there. Alternatively, you can reach it from the upper end of the village of Regetovka, more precisely from the former Environmental Education Centre of the Slovak Environmental Agency. In the past, a nature trail with 13 information panels led from there to the NPR. Today there are only 5 of them. The signs of the nature trail have practically disappeared and you will find it only very sporadically, so if you do not know at least partly the location and the approximate position of the NPR, go to it from the upper end of the village and take a GPS or at least a map with you just to be sure. You will avoid wandering.
