The wooden Greek Catholic Church of St Luke the Evangelist in Brežany It is one of the oldest and most interesting wooden religious buildings in the Šariš region. It was built in 1727 and to this day it remains an exceptionally valuable example of traditional timber architecture in north-eastern Slovakia. It is situated in the village of Brežany in the district of Prešov and, as the only wooden church in the district, it is listed as a national cultural monument.
What is particularly striking about the building is the combination of elements Eastern Carpathian wooden architecture with Gothic and Western architectural influences. The church thus appears different from many of the typical wooden Orthodox churches found in the north-eastern part of Slovakia. Its architectural form also bears witness to the cultural and religious intermingling that was characteristic of the Šariš region in the past.
A timber-framed building dating from 1727
The church is three-compartment and single-tower. The log-built nave and sanctuary rest on a stone foundation that levels out the sloping ground. A separate tower with a post-and-beam structure is attached to the nave on the western side. Its lower part forms an open vestibule, and the tower is topped by a pyramidal roof covered with wooden shingles.
The unusual architectural design sets the church in Brežany apart from traditional Eastern Carpathian Orthodox churches. Whilst its three-nave layout is associated with the Eastern rite, the overall form of the building shows distinct influences Gothic Roman Catholic ecclesiastical architecture. At the same time, specialist sources point to a connection between its composition and the wooden church in nearby Hervartove.
An 18th-century iconostasis
A key feature of the interior is Baroque iconostasis dating from 1733. It therefore dates from just a few years after the completion of the church itself. Its richly decorated woodcarvings and gilding provide a valuable example of sacred art from the first half of the 18th century. A characteristic decorative motif is the vine, which symbolises the Church of Christ.
An interesting feature of the iconostasis is the absence of the traditional depiction of the Crucifixion or of a cross in its upper section. Such an arrangement is relatively unusual within the iconography of the Eastern Rite and enhances the artistic and historical value of the church in Brežany.
A Baroque altar and rare works of art
Another valuable feature of the interior is the Baroque high altar, dating from 1782. It features a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary by the artist František Ferdynandy, which dates from the same year. The church also houses other historical paintings and icons, including depictions of Saint Luke the Evangelist, the Pietà and Christ with the Book of Life.
The icon of Saint Luke the Evangelist deserves special attention; it depicts the saint writing sacred texts. At the bottom are figures of the church’s founders, praying to Christ. This detail, too, highlights the connection between sacred art and the specific people and community who contributed to the church’s construction.
A Living Legacy of Šariš
The church was restored in the second half of the 18th century and has undergone further restoration work in more recent times, which has helped to preserve its historical and artistic value. The building is still used for religious purposes today, and Roman Catholic services are held there. Although the church remains the property of the Greek Catholic Church, it now serves the Roman Catholic community.
The wooden Church of St Luke in Brežany is thus not only an important historical monument in the Šariš region, but also an example of how various architectural, artistic and religious traditions came together in one place. For visitors exploring the wooden churches of north-eastern Slovakia, it offers an interesting stop-off point between Prešov and the region’s other religious monuments.

The wooden church in Brežany is also interesting because it is the only wooden church in the Prešov district and, at the same time, the only one of its kind in the Šariš Highlands. It is precisely its unusual architecture that sets it apart from the typical wooden churches of north-eastern Slovakia.
Another point of interest is the historic cemetery in the immediate vicinity of the church. Here you will find old graves and metal crosses, which contribute to the atmosphere of the entire sacred complex. The cemetery, together with the wooden church, thus forms a valuable historical ensemble.
The church in Brežany is also an interesting stop for visitors following in the footsteps of Šariš’s wooden religious architecture. Thanks to its location near Prešov, it can be included in an itinerary alongside the region’s other historical monuments.
