Black Eagle

In the southern part of the square there is a block of the city's representative buildings, known as the Black Eagle since time immemorial. It was referred to in city documents as publicum diversorium (public inn). After the proper modification and the addition of new premises in the courtyard, the inn served mainly the wealthier visitors to the town, but also for gatherings of the townspeople on various occasions. In 1602, a stable for 28 horses was added, which was very convenient for travellers passing through the town. In 1799 it housed the officers of General Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov, who was sent with his troops to help the Austrian army fighting Napoleon. In 1806, the Russian army stayed at the inn together with the Prince of Smolensk, General Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov.

Black Eagle in the 19th century

From the beginning of the 19th century the inn was increasingly used for various cultural purposes. In the 1840s, an exhibition building of the town redoubt was built in the rear part of the inn's courtyard. Štúr and J. M. Hurban, who came to Prešov at the head of Slovak volunteers in the imperial army. After the reconstruction, the Black Eagle complex included a redoubt building, a theatre and a luxury hotel with a restaurant and a café. In 1922, the first congress of education workers in Slovakia was held here, which was inaugurated by the then Minister of Education and National Enlightenment Vavro Šrobár. Nowadays, the Black Eagle (redoubt) serves for the municipal organization Park of Culture and Recreation for cultural and social enjoyment of the town's inhabitants.
