Town Hall Square, Bardejov, Slovakia

Bardejov townhouses

Bardejov townhouses were influenced by the division of the town into building plots. Mostly three-axial, two-storey houses were built in the square, and three-axial, one-storey houses in the side streets. The length of the plot determined the rectangular plan of the house as a two-tract. Almost every house was also used for commercial purposes, so a passageway led through the entire ground floor. From the corridor one entered the lower rooms, the internal staircase to the second floor and the stairs to the cellar. The rooms were arranged in a row. The entrances were lined and decorated with stone portals. The portal above the entrance to the front room was usually the most ornate. The living and reception rooms on the first floor had windows facing the square. At the back were the kitchen and the servants' quarters. The portals, staircases and various niches in the walls were decorated with stonework, the facades and the representative rooms with murals. All the townhouses are precious and have their own history.
