Rooster Hill

Village Jacob's Vole lies on the northern slopes of the Bachureň Mountains and the Spišsko-Sariš Intermountains, in the valley of the Torysa River. Above the village proudly rises Rooster Hill. It offers beautiful views of the wide surroundings from an altitude of 711 metres. Kohut played an important role in the early days of Hungary, in the formation of the borders between Poland and Hungary. The border between Hungary and Poland led here. There was a watchtower on the top of Kohút, from which there was good visibility of the whole Tory valley, the Čergov Mountains and even Hromovec.

What is the symbolism of the Rooster? The rooster became the symbol of the herald of the new day, i.e. light. Some religions placed it on the tops of their temples to represent the victory of light over darkness. Apparently, the peak of Kohut, above Jacob's Ox, had similar symbolism. Even today, its appearance is accentuated by the planted conifer trees, which from a distance resemble a rooster's crest. In the early morning, the sun's rays also touch the aforementioned mountain and its ridge. This was the location of the guard unit and symbolically the first rays of the morning came from the side where the Hungarian state was located. Beyond the top of the Rooster, to the north, it was still dark and the light came a little later.

At its top there is a pleasant resting place, so give yourself some time to stay here. Enjoy the beautiful views, relax on the benches by the wooden cross with an altar, or indulge in a tasty barbecue and sit under the shelter with a warm cup of tea or coffee.

Hiking trail will take you to the top of Kohut from several points. Jakubova Voľa, Uzovské Pekľany, Uzovský Šalgov, Červenica near Sabinov or the town of Sabinov.
