Above the town of Sabinov Šanec is being closed. This is the name given to a wooded hillside right next to the River Torysa. Šanec is mainly used for recreation and, due to its proximity to the town (with access directly from the main road), it is a popular destination in every season. You can reach the foot of the hill via various paths; the routes are known as „The Švabľovské footpaths“. At the top there is a flat area where, in September 2020, a ceremonial opening took place „Lookout tower on the Chance“. The construction of the lookout tower was realized thanks to the financial support of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic, as a means to promote tourism and increase the attractiveness of the suburban Švabľovka Forest Park.
The Šanca Lookout Tower and its surroundings
The lookout tower is at an altitude of 465 m above sea level. The location and the maximum height of the lookout tower were limited due to the nearby Ražňany airport, its protection zones and the safety of air traffic. The lookout tower is high 11m, has two storeys and a timber structure, built using state-of-the-art timber-working technology.
At the tower you will find a seating area from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the entire panorama of the Šariš region from Šariš Castle Hill, Hradová, Zobrana, Malkovská hôrka, through Makovica, Bodoň, Lysá, Čierna Hora to Šimonka.
