The Mirkovská iris meadow was declared a nature reserve in 1979. It is a torso of the wetland biotope of the Košice basin preserved as a narrow gap surrounded by agricultural land.
The protected Siberian Iris habitat is one of the high-value stabilising elements in intensively used agricultural landscapes and provides refuge for many other protected species of plants and animals, e.g. the field rattlesnake (Crex crex). The area of the site is 11,394m2. It was declared to protect the remnants of the wet meadow communities of the western foothills of the Slanské Hills with a rich occurrence of the protected plant - the Siberian iris (Iris sibirica) accompanied by other characteristic plant species for scientific research purposes.
