Šanec is the name for a part of the wooded hill of the town of Sabinov and it is located right next to the Torysa river. Šanec is mainly used for recreation and because of its proximity to the town (entrance directly from the main road) it is a popular place in every season. You can get to Kohút in 2-3 hours along the ridge.
On Good Friday in 1990 the Salesian youth held the first Stations of the Cross, during which a wooden birch cross was carried to Šanec. This cross was later used as firewood. The idea to build a stable cross of durable solid wood on this place was suggested by the then VPS worker, Mr. Bartolomej Rokošný. The final form and finish of the cross was created by the carpenter Alfonz Kuchár. Wooden crosses are placed along the path to the cross. There are 14 crosses-14 stops of the Stations of the Cross. The cross provides a nice view of the panorama of the town of Sabinov and the surrounding villages.
