Church of St. Joseph

The Baroque single-nave Roman Catholic church with a double-towered facade is connected on the northern side with the monastery. In the 14th century the town provided the church to the Carmelites who came to Prešov from Poland in 1288. By the decision of the ruler Leopold I in 1661, the church and the monastery belonged to the Franciscan order from the nearby Nižná Šebastová. Thanks to the financial help of Baron František Klobušický from Prešov and Baroness Šóšová from Solivar, the reconstruction of the originally Gothic church soon began. The whole façade with two side towers was modified according to the model of the Jesuit Church of Ill Gés in Rome. In the southern part of the Franciscan church, near the altar of St. Anthony, his remains are kept together with those of Theresa Klobušická. The restored church was consecrated in 1735. On 3 December 1888, after costly reconstruction work, a second fire broke out, in which both slender church towers burnt down and only a torso remained. The Franciscan church was subjected to a necessary overhaul in 1984-1993.
