Kamenica Castle

Kamenica Castle

One of the attractive castle ruins is located above the village of Kamenica. Although only the remains of the walls and Renaissance fortifications are visible today, it remains one of the most attractive places where the history of Kamenický hrad is connected with the interesting natural scenery of the Čergov Mountains. The castle lies on the western slopes of the Čergov and was built in the 13th century on a high limestone cliff above the village of Kamenica. It probably served as a royal hunting castle. At the beginning of the 16th century it was rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress, but in 1558 it was conquered and demolished by the troops of Emperor Ferdinand.

Beautiful view

The ruins of Kamenice Castle with the remains of the walls and Renaissance fortifications offer a nice view of the surroundings and the Čergova Ridge. The annual Night of the Castle Ruins and the summer Castle Festival, which includes performances by historical fencing groups, fencing and shooting groups, pottery and basketry, have become popular. Visitors can also see an exhibition of findings from archaeological research at the castle.
