the 49th parallel

Did you know that The 49th parallel of north latitude runs through the historic centre of Prešov? This imaginary geographical line runs right across Main Street and is one of the points of interest that make Prešov an unusual link to distant parts of the world. In Slovakia, this is an extraordinary geographical and tourist attraction, which you can visit whilst taking a leisurely stroll through the historic city centre.

Where can you find the 49th parallel in Prešov?

  1. In Prešov, the parallel line is marked directly on Main Street, in the historic city centre. Its route is marked by a stainless steel strip running between the buildings at Hlavná 115 and Hlavná 124. Visitors therefore do not need to seek out any separate attractions outside the town centre – they simply need to stop at the marked spot whilst strolling along Hlavná Street and symbolically cross this significant geographical boundary.

The urban character of this attraction is also one of its great advantages. The 49th parallel in Prešov is freely accessible outdoors and it can be included in a tour of the most significant sights in the historic centre. This interesting spot can therefore form part of a short stroll, a family day out or a sightseeing tour of Prešov.

A parallel line connecting Prešov with the world

The 49° north parallel passes through several significant locations in the northern hemisphere. In Europe, for example, it crosses České Budějovice, Regensburg and Karlsruhe, continues towards France and then across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. In Canada, the route reaches the Gander area and then forms an approximately 2,000-kilometre-long section of the border between Canada and the United States.

The further course of this geographical line is also interesting. After crossing the Pacific Ocean, it continues through the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin and Russian territory, then through China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. It finally returns to Slovakia via Ukrainian territory, once again passing through the Prešov region.

A geographical point of interest right in the historic centre

The 49th parallel in Prešov is particularly interesting because runs straight through the historic city centre. A geographical feature that would otherwise remain merely a mark on a map can be experienced directly within the urban environment. Visitors can stand on the marked line and realise that, at that very moment, they are at the same latitude as a number of distant places and territories.

The city of Prešov has included the 49th parallel amongst its intangible heritage sites. Its inclusion on the city’s list of places of interest was approved in 2009. The physical marking of the line on Hlavná Street subsequently makes it easier to recognise this geographical feature whilst visiting the city.
