The Slovak Opal Mines Nature Trail introduces visitors to a unique blend of mining history, precious opal and nature Slanské hills. The route runs The Dubnica Mines Conservation Area, specifically the historic Libanka mining district, where old mining works associated with the extraction of precious opal have been preserved.
In the footsteps of precious opal mining
The nature trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres and offers visitors 14 information boards. These explain the formation and properties of opal, the history of its mining, selected mining structures, as well as the natural features of the surrounding area. A separate section is devoted to bats, which, following the cessation of mining operations, found suitable conditions for hibernation in the extensive underground spaces.
Slovak opal mines They are among the most significant sites associated with the mining of precious opal in Slovakia. The nature trail therefore offers a different perspective on the mining area – not only as a historic mining site, but also as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The Natural Environment of the Slanské Hills
The route runs through woodland Slanské hills, whilst the information panels also cover geology, vegetation and zoology the surrounding countryside. During a single walk, visitors thus gain a basic understanding of how geological conditions, the history of mining and the current state of the natural environment are interlinked.
Bats are a significant part of the site. The underground spaces of the former mines serve as an important wintering ground for them, and it is partly for this reason that the area was, in 1964: Designated as the Dubnica Mines Conservation Area.
Protected area
The nature trail is situated in an area with Level 4 of nature conservation. Its aim is therefore not only to showcase the historical heritage of the Slovak opal mines, but also to highlight the need to protect local habitats and to behave responsibly in the countryside. The information panels also cover the topic of sustainable forest management.
The trail was created in collaboration with Slovak Opal Mines, Lesy SR and the Regional Nature Conservation Centre in Prešov. The information boards are in both Slovak and English, so the site is also suitable for foreign visitors. Entry to the trail is free of charge and, according to the operator, it is suitable for both children and adults.
A trip to explore history and nature
The Slovak Opal Mines Nature Trail is a great addition to a visit Slovak opal mines in Dubník. Whilst the tour of the mine gives visitors an insight into the lives of the miners and the mining process itself, the educational trail allows visitors to explore the wider area of the historic mining district and its natural features.
For tourists, the approximately 1.5-kilometre circular walk offers the chance to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the woods, with plenty of information about opal, mining and the Slanské Hills. It is therefore an interesting suggestion for a trip around Prešov, which links the natural environment with the history of one of the most significant opal sites in Slovakia.
