These days we are experiencing a season full of fun, dancing and food. Carnival is a time of merriment and feasting, associated with the transition from winter to spring. It lasts from the feast of the Three Kings to Ash Wednesday.
This period is one of the merriest times of the year. There are various parties, balls and slaughters, which are associated with a large number of dishes. In villages in the past, there was a tradition of various carnival games in which various magical acts were performed. Young men dressed in various masks would walk in procession through the village, from house to house, and the locals would skewer various foods (bacon or sausage) onto their spits. A typical carnival meal is doughnuts (kreplach) fried in lard. After the last carnival party, it was customary to bury the basa to symbolise the end of the period of feasting, dancing and singing and the beginning of the 40-day Easter fast.
