Discover the jewel of the Slovak mountains

In the middle of the Slanské vrchy mountains, between the villages of Zlatá Baňa and Červenica, you will find the mysterious underground world of the famous opal mines. For centuries, Slovak opals have stood out for their intense play of colours, the so-called opalescence, and they are highly valued on world markets for their unique properties. The oldest opal mines in the world are located between Zlatá Baňa and Červenica and are also known as the Dubníckie mines. The underground network of tunnels reaches up to 35 kilometres in length and connects a complicated system of underground mining. They have been closed and forgotten since mining ceased in 1922. It took over 90 years before they were reopened. Today, you can experience a guided tour of this unique monument with expert commentary on the history, geology and mineralogy and learn many interesting facts about the treasure of the Slanské Hills. There is a lot of adventure waiting for you in the mine. Somewhere in the darkness, the spirit of the underground is hiding, and those who are not afraid will see its luminous gaze. A test of courage awaits you in the corridor of complete darkness. You will become true opal seekers. After the tour, you will regain the necessary strength in the Visitor Centre - Josef's Shed. If you remember to take your Šariš Card with you, you will be even more refreshed with a discount. Continue to make the most of an exciting day in the Protected Area of the Dubnické mines, where the Educational Trail has been built. This will take you through the Libanka mining district, where you will find old mining works created during the mining of precious opal. This trail, located in the 4th level of nature protection, offers fun and education at the same time. On the trail of approximately 1.5 km, there are 14 information boards dedicated to the origin and mining of opal, bats, selected mining works as well as the vegetation and zoology of the Slanské vrchy Mountains. Entrance to the trail is free of charge and is suitable for both children and adults.

Picturesque canyon

If you are a lover of natural beauty and adventure, the Lačnov Canyon should not be missing on your list of visits to Šariš. This picturesque canyon with impressive rock formations and waterfalls provides an immersive experience for the whole family. It is located in the northeastern part of Branisko between the villages of Lipovce and Lačnov, dug by the Lačnovský brook. This gorge is about 2 km long, nicknamed the Little Slovak Paradise. You can admire rare and diverse vegetation in it. A walk through the area will take you between steep slopes and high walls with bizarre rock formations. Among the most famous is Kamenná Baba, whose shape resembles a woman with a child in her arms. This area was declared a state nature reserve in 1965. Other interesting formations include the 60 m high Moses Pillar and the rock eye of Vrátnica. In the rocks there are also the well-known caves Komín and Zlá Diera, which is the only accessible cave in the Šariš region. The cave is exceptional for its very sensitive way of access, where you walk with a guide through the mysterious underground with a helmet on your head. Your attention will be attracted by the Pond of Happiness. According to legend, it is supposed to be especially popular with young maidens. If they dip their toes in it, they will find their life partners within a year. Currently, the cave is home to 12 species of bats that hibernate there. Around the cave there is a rest area with benches and swings and beautiful scenery. On the way through the forest to the Zlá Hora (Bad Hole) Cave there is the Srdiečko (Heart) lookout point. The untouched village of Lačnov in the mountain locality is one of the few in Slovakia that has been completely preserved. The atmosphere is completed by cottages with wells and wooden troughs with clear water. Even if you go from Lipovce towards the village of Lačnov, you will experience a „gravitational anomaly“, which will offer you an interesting spectacle.
