The regional tourism organisation Región Šariš together with the Slovak Technical Museum is trying to gradually awaken and revive the Solivar area, which is unique of its kind in Slovakia. One of the ways is the event „Day of Salt“, which will take place on 3 September 2022 in the Solivar Museum for the fourth time.
This year the event will again be rich in a varied programme. For the little ones there will be theatrical performances. Portal Theatre tells the story of the mixed-up fairy tales that spilled into the magic pot. The fact that salt is indeed more precious than gold will convince Cililing Theatre. An explosion of fun will bring Smiley, which will teach the children new dances, songs and compete in various disciplines. Magician Gabi will perform incredible magic tricks and juggling skills. Musical entertainment will be provided by bands Beetles Band, Mafia Corner a mining orchestra from the Polish salt mine Bochnia. There will be free entertainment provided by DJ Majki.
The event will not be missing stalls with crafts and refreshments. Visitors can see a live demonstration of various handicrafts, the production of salt-ban lace or gingerbread, the work of a tinker and basket maker, the production of costumed dolls and other handicrafts. Wieliczka Museum of Krakow County from Poland will present the production of ropes or cooking salt. Various creative workshops and a children's carousel will be prepared for young and old alike. During the event there will be photo wall with original mining motif. Via touchscreen info kiosk visitors can virtually view all the objects that are open to the public, as well as those that are not. They can also find further practical information about the museum. Throughout the event, they can enter a raffle for interesting prizes such as a bag of salt, a mobile phone, blenders, carafes and many other tempting prizes.
The event also includes guided guided tour, which will guide visitors after the reconstructed Salt Warehouse. It has been used for centuries to store, handle or distribute salt. From October 2014 to September 2015, the building underwent extensive reconstruction, which resulted in a representative multifunctional cultural and social space designed for exhibitions, presentations, congresses and educational activities. Undoubtedly the most enticing part of the program will be the ”living museum”, which is again prepared by Lukáš Matufka with his theatre Portal. Thanks to them in the Salt Warehouse a story from the ancient history of the salt works comes to life. Visitors will get a unique opportunity to see something unusual during the event in Prešov's Solivar, which they will not experience during regular tours.
The year 2022 is also another cause for celebration. The Slovak Technical Museum is celebrating three important anniversaries this year, 50th anniversary of the Solivar Museum in Prešov and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Museum of Aviation in Košice. The STM in Košice opened its doors to visitors at the end of July, who could experience a special programme. The Solivar Museum celebrations are still to come in early October. The celebrations will also include the release of the fourth edition of the commemorative coin - Soľnobanski toliar, which collectors will be able to buy later. This commemorative coin is dedicated to 450th anniversary of the start of salt mining in the Imperial shaft. The unique coin has a diameter of 40 mm and was produced in two limited editions (pure silver and ZAMAC alloy). The front side of the toliara depicts a miner and a shaft. The reverse side of the toliar depicts a double-headed eagle with a royal crown, holding a sword in one hand and a royal scepter in the other. Such a motif was used on topiaries between 1792 and 1835.
The author of this year's original graphic motif is an illustrator from Prešov Katarína Ilkovičová. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, she began to study illustration and graphic design. In her illustrations she mostly uses various traditional techniques, acrylic and tempera.
