Once a year, Discovering Prešov takes participants beyond the city limits to introduce them to interesting places, landmarks and stories which, whilst not directly linked to Prešov, are certainly worth discovering. This year, this special trip took place in 9 August 2026 and his goals became Fričovce – a village that harbours a true gem of Renaissance architecture.
This time, we set off to the manor house in Fričovce, which captivated visitors not only with its history, but also with its unique décor and the stories of the people connected to this place.
More than a hundred explorers in Fričovce
There was great interest in this special visit – the following people visited Fričovce more than 100 participants. We were, of course, delighted to see such a large group, and it was also a great source of joy for PhDr. Ján Mikula, Mayor of Fričovce, who welcomed all the explorers and addressed them in his opening remarks outside the town hall.
After a brief welcome, the participants split into two groups so that they could explore the various sites in smaller groups and learn as much as possible about them.
In the footsteps of František Andraščík
The first group, accompanied by their guide, by Andrea Sivaničová set out to explore the lives of notable figures and the sacred monuments of Fričovce.
The focus was primarily on a notable native of Fričovce, the Slovak poet To František Andraščík. His life and work are an integral part of the village’s history, and during the tour we reflected on his legacy and his connection to the place where he was born.
The tour also included a visit to the Baroque Church of St Bartholomew, which offered a further insight into the rich history of Fričovce. The church and its atmosphere provided a fitting backdrop to the account of the village’s past and its inhabitants.
The Renaissance manor house and its stories
Whilst one group explored the history of the village and its notable figures, the other made its way to the manor house. It was here that visitors were introduced to the world of Renaissance architecture and several centuries of history.
The owner told us about the manor house František Tomko, who guided the participants through its history, introduced the various owners and also recounted the stories associated with this exceptional building.
We took a look around its nooks and crannies and the rooms where the following have been preserved period features, and at the same time we had the chance to admire its impressive exterior.
Sgraffito decoration that is unrivalled
One of the castle’s biggest attractions is its unique sgraffito decoration. On the façade there is almost 150 historical and mythological figures, thanks to which the manor house not only looks majestic, but also appears like an open book full of symbols and stories.
It is precisely these details that remind us of the rich cultural heritage that lies hidden even off the beaten track. All you need to do is stop, take a closer look and explore.

Sunday Exploring Prešov in Fričovce It was further proof that fascinating stories, beautiful architecture and rare historical monuments can often be found just a stone’s throw beyond the city limits.
