Hanušovce nad Topľou - formation

The village was founded after 1312 on the territory of the Liptov Abovci. The earliest written mention is from 1332, when King Karol Róbert granted the inhabitants of the free village of Hanušovce the privileges of a landowner's town and the right to market. From 1346 Hanušovce belonged to the feudal estate of the Šóš family from Solivar, and from the 18th century to the Dessewffy and Berzeviczy family. Hanus became the first sholthy of Hanušovce and the name of the town is usually derived from his name. However, it can also be derived from the name of the monastic order of the Johanites (villa Hanusfalva - 1332, villa Johanis - 1355). In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants were mainly engaged in farming, but later crafts also developed - e.g. blacksmithing, shoemaking, tannery (Garbiarska Street), pipe making, drying of medicinal plants. In 1630-1717 there was a humanistic gymnasium in Hanušov. At the end of the 16th century Hanušovce was a medium-sized town. They were granted the right to hold three annual fairs (on the Holy Spirit's Day, the Feast of St. Cosmas and Damian and the Feast of All Saints). In 1635, three more fairs were added: the Three Kings, St. Tiberius the Martyr and St. Ladislaus the King. The town has continued this tradition and since 1990 the Hanuš Fairs have been held. There are several historical monuments in the town: the Early Gothic Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century, the Renaissance Šóšovský (Small) Church from 1564 and the Renaissance-Baroque manor house of the Dežöfi family from the second half of the 20th century. 18th century, which is the seat of the Museum of Homeland History with historical, ethnographic and natural history expositions. The drying room of medicinal plants is a national cultural monument. Perhaps the most distinctive monument is the network of railway viaducts. The cultural and social life in the town is enriched by the folklore ensemble Oblík and the folklore group Vargovčan. Tourism is developed in the Krokus Club of Slovak Tourists.
