The Prešov region is popular with cyclists and hikers. For this reason, new automatic counters will be added in the region, which will collect data on the number of visitors to busy sections. In total, 78 of them will be added in the Prešov Region. The collected data will serve as a basis for further strategic planning and protection of natural sites.
„The project Intelligent Tourism in the Prešov Self-Governing Region, which we launched at the beginning of this year, includes the installation of automated visitor sensors that will collect anonymised data on visitor movements in real time. The data collected will allow us to better understand visitor behaviour, identify stressed sites, optimise territory management and support sustainable tourism development,“ explained Milan Majerský, Chairman of the PSK.
In the Šariš region, counters will be added mainly in the sections in the Prešov district (11 units) and in the Sabinov district (6 units).
The automation and digitisation of the enumerator links will complete the picture of the overall traffic pattern. The aim is to help to protect and develop tourism in the Prešov region. At the same time, a link with the digital platform Geoportal PSK is planned. The recorded data will thus provide a comprehensive database of open data, thematic maps and dashboards. The data link to the already existing projects of the state administration, local government or national parks in the field of tourism and transport monitoring is planned.
„This system will enable efficient linking, evaluation and use of data across the different areas of tourism and transport. For us, this is a significant shift towards better strategic planning, visitor management, sustainable territorial development and informed decision-making based on real data, not guesswork. The data collected will contribute to the protection of natural and attractive tourist sites and to the improvement of services for visitors and residents of the county,“ Majerský specified.
The project Smart Tourism in PSK is implemented thanks to the Programme Slovakia within the Call of the Ministry of Investment, Regional Development and Informatization. The total value of the project is more than 584 thousand Euro, of which more than 537 thousand Euro is a non-repayable financial contribution, the remaining almost 47 thousand Euro is co-financing by the region. The project implementation period is until 2027.
