The wooden church of St Michael the Archangel in Ladomirov\u00e1<\/strong> It is one of the most significant wooden religious buildings in north-eastern Slovakia. The Greek Catholic church, dating from 1742<\/strong> It forms part of a group of Slovak wooden churches which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List<\/strong>. It is a significant example of the traditional architecture and spiritual heritage of the Rusyns and other inhabitants of the Carpathians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church is situated in the village of Ladomirov\u00e1, not far from Svidn\u00edk<\/a> and is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. The building was constructed using traditional carpentry techniques and, in keeping with tradition, without a single nail. Together with the separate bell tower and the original fencing, it forms a significant ecclesiastical complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unique wooden architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The church in Ladomirov is\u00a0a three-room log cabin<\/strong>, the layout of which is based on the Lemko style of wooden churches. The interior consists of three main areas \u2013 the vestibule, the nave and the sanctuary. A distinctive feature is its striking vertical composition and stepped roofs covered with wooden shingles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shingle-roofed domes, topped with metal crosses, sit above the individual sections of the building, whilst a tall tower dominates the entire complex. The architecture of the church combines elements the Lemko, Russian-Byzantine and Eastern Carpathian traditions<\/strong>, which gives the church its distinctive architectural character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complex also includes a wooden bell tower of a pillar-and-beam construction<\/strong>, which stands on the south side of the church. The external walls are clad with vertical spruce planks, and the overall appearance respects the traditional character of the church building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iconostasis and historical decorations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the most valuable features of the interior are iconostasis and altar from the mid-18th century<\/strong>. The iconostasis serves an important liturgical and artistic function and forms a natural part of Eastern Rite churches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another notable feature of the site is the preserved section of the wooden palisade \u2013 a timber fence with a shingled roof. At the entrance stands a small wooden gate with a low pyramidal roof, which adds to the historic character of the entire complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The History of the Church and Monastery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The history of Ladomirova is also linked to a significant a monastery with a printing press<\/strong>, which was founded here by Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox monks following the 1917 revolution. The monastery became a spiritual and cultural centre, but was destroyed after the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church itself was not spared from damage either. The right-hand section of the iconostasis was restored after the war, and in 1957 the church was damaged by a severe storm, during which a lime tree fell onto the building. Despite these events, a significant part of the church\u2019s historic appearance has been preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the year In 1968, the church was designated a national cultural monument<\/strong>. Forty years later, it gained international recognition when it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, alongside seven other wooden churches in Slovakia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wooden church in Ladomirov\u00e1 is a must-see\u00a0Carpathian Wooden Way<\/a><\/strong>, which links the historic wooden churches of north-eastern Slovakia. When visiting it, you can carry on to other remarkable churches in the surrounding area Svidn\u00edk<\/a> a Bardejova<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
