The Greek Catholic church is situated in the village of Tročany, not far from Bardejova and is part of Carpathian Wooden Way, which links the historic wooden churches of north-eastern Slovakia.

The history of the wooden church

The exact year the church was built is unknown. However, according to historians and the architectural style, its construction can be dated to late 15th or early 16th century. It is interesting to note that, according to tradition, the church originally stood in the nearby village of Rešov and was later moved to Tročany.

This is a log cabin made of planed wooden beams, which was built without the use of modern construction technologies. The traditional construction methods and preserved architectural features bear witness to the standard of folk architecture during a period when wooden churches were a natural part of the Carpathian landscape.

In the year In 1968, the church was designated a national cultural monument, thereby further emphasising its historical and architectural significance.

The architecture of the church

The Church of St Luke is a typical example of an Eastern Rite church. Its layout is adapted to the liturgical requirements of the Greek Catholic Church and consists of three main areas – the sanctuary, the nave and the women’s gallery.

A characteristic feature is high shingle roof, which protects the wooden structure from the elements. The complex also includes a free-standing wooden bell tower. Together, they create the typical silhouette of a Carpathian wooden church.

The building is also interesting for its simplicity. Unlike large brick churches, it appears more modest; yet it is precisely because of its traditional materials, proportions and craftsmanship that it ranks among the most significant examples folk sacred architecture in Slovakia.

The iconostasis and the interior

The most valuable feature of the interior is iconostasis, which separates the sanctuary from the space for the faithful and also forms one of the most important parts of an Eastern Rite church. Its decoration is linked to the tradition of Byzantine Christianity and reflects the spiritual world of Greek Catholic believers.

The wooden interior, together with the iconostasis, forms a cohesive historical whole. Visitors can thus discover, directly within the original setting, the principles of sacred architecture that have developed over the centuries in the Carpathian region.

Part of the Carpathian Wooden Trail

The Tročiansky Church is one of the stops Carpathian Wooden Way, which is one of the most interesting cultural and tourist routes in north-eastern Slovakia.
