Originally a Romanesque-Gothic single-nave, today a three-nave church with a square presbytery, a northern sacristy, a west tower and side chapels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The church was probably built at the same time as \u0160ari\u0161 Castle as a single-nave building with a massive west tower and a square presbytery vaulted with a cross-rib vault, to which a similarly vaulted sacristy was attached from the north side. Shortly after its construction, the interior was decorated with murals.
The church is mentioned in 1262, when the parish was removed from the jurisdiction of the archdeacon. Already in 1248, however, tithes from Ve\u013ek\u00fd \u0160ari\u0161 are mentioned. Experts assume that there may have been an even older church on the site of the present building.
The church underwent a major reconstruction in 1656, when the nave was divided by built-in pillars into a triple nave, which was newly vaulted. Most of the Gothic windows of the church were also altered and enlarged in Baroque style. A tribune was built into the western part of the nave and a smaller extension was added to the south side of the tower.
The medieval form of the building was even more suppressed in the last third of the 18th century, when side chapels were added to the south and north sides of the nave. Thanks to them, the plan of the church took on the shape of a cross. In 1869 the tower was raised by one storey and re-roofed.
The last comprehensive restoration of the church was carried out in 1995-1999. The exterior was restored and the bricked-up east window of the presbytery was presented. In 1998, work was also carried out in the interior, when medieval wall paintings from the 13th-14th centuries with still Byzantine motifs were uncovered.
Despite the Baroque reconstructions, the church represents a valuable example of medieval architecture from the period of the blending of Romanesque and Gothic styles in our territory. Only the tower and part of the presbytery have retained their medieval appearance. Most of the architectural details in the exterior have been preserved on the tower - grouped windows, several rosette six-light windows and a Gothic portal to the undercroft. On the east side of the presbytery a Gothic window with a valuable stone tracery is presented. A very similar one can also be found on the church in nearby \u017dup\u010dany. The presbytery and the sacristy, connected by a Gothic portal, are vaulted with a heavy cross-rib vault with circular studs, which are decorated with a relief of a rosette and oak leaves. A Gothic stone baptismal font survives from around 1300. In the north wall of the presbytery there is a late Gothic stone pastophorium with an arch in the shape of a donkey's back. The unearthed medieval wall paintings belong to two stages of decoration. The older late Romanesque one is represented by a fragment of the Scourging scene from the Christological cycle on the north wall of the nave. Slightly younger is the fresco with the Crucifixion scene on the left side of the triumphal arch, which experts date to around 1300.
