Thanks to its well-preserved historic centre, Gothic architecture and significant monuments, it is one of Slovakia\u2019s most valuable towns. Since&nbsp;<strong>2000<\/strong>&nbsp;is its historic centre, together with&nbsp;<strong>Jewish suburbs<\/strong>&nbsp;registered in&nbsp;<strong>UNESCO World Heritage List<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The earliest written reference to the town dates from the year&nbsp;<strong>1241<\/strong>. Its development was aided by its location on a major trade route between&nbsp;<strong>the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea<\/strong>. In the year&nbsp;<strong>1376<\/strong>&nbsp;Bardejov was granted the status of&nbsp;<strong>free royal town<\/strong>&nbsp;and became an important centre for trade, crafts and learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town\u2019s most prominent feature is&nbsp;<strong>Minor Basilica of Saint Egidius<\/strong>&nbsp;with eleven rare Gothic winged altars. In the centre of the historic square stands&nbsp;<strong>town hall<\/strong>, which combines elements of the late Gothic and Renaissance styles and is one of the town\u2019s most significant architectural monuments. The historic centre is complemented by town houses and a well-preserved system&nbsp;<strong>the city walls and bastions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Reformation, Bardejov was an important centre&nbsp;<strong>education, printing and culture<\/strong>. A humanist and teacher worked here&nbsp;<strong>Leonard St\u00f6ckel<\/strong>&nbsp;and as early as the 16th century, the town was home to one of the first public libraries in Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important part of our cultural heritage is&nbsp;<strong>Jewish suburbia<\/strong>&nbsp;including a synagogue, ritual baths and other farm buildings. The town\u2019s religious and cultural diversity is also reflected in its Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Greek Catholic and Orthodox churches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An integral part of the town are&nbsp;<strong>Bardejov Spa<\/strong>, known for its healing springs and&nbsp;<strong>The Museum of Folk Architecture<\/strong>, the oldest open-air museum in Slovakia.
